Swordtail - Sanke Koi (Xiphophorus hellerii)
The Swordtail (Xiphophorus helleri) is a popular, peaceful, and hardy freshwater fish known for the distinctive, elongated lower tail fin found on males and their active, energetic swimming behavior, making it an excellent choice for beginner aquarists. It is native to Central America and Mexico and is a staple favorite in the aquarium hobby.
Key Features:
- They are active, social, and generally peaceful fish that should be kept in groups with a ratio of at least two to three females for every one male.
- They are excellent community fish, though mature males can sometimes display territorial aggression or chasing behaviors toward other males if the aquarium is too small.
- Beginner-friendly.
- Maximum size: 10–14cm (excluding the male's sword-like tail extension).
- Ideal water temperature: 22.0°C - 28.0°C
- pH range: 7.0 - 8.4
- They prefer a spacious, well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots (dense live plants, caves, and driftwood) combined with ample open swimming space. Because they are powerful swimmers and notorious jumpers, a tight-fitting tank lid is absolutely essential.
- They thrive in moderately hard to hard, alkaline water with steady water flow.
