The Mary River rainbow fish is a vibrant, active freshwater fish native to the Mary River system in Queensland, Australia. Known to aquarists as the Checkered Mary River Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia eachamensis or a form of Melanotaenia splendida inornata), it is a popular and relatively hardy species for community aquariums.
Key Features:
- A peaceful and active schooling fish that does best when kept in groups of 6 or more. They are compatible with other similarly sized, peaceful species.
- Temperament - best kept in community aquariums
- Moderate-friendly care level
- Maximum size: 10-12cm
- Ideal water temperature: 22.0°C - 28.0°C
- pH range: 6.5 - 7.5
In the wild, they inhabit slow-moving streams, lagoons, and clear rivers with dense aquatic vegetation. In an aquarium, they need a well-planted tank with plenty of open space for swimming and prefer moderate water movement. A tank of at least 180 liters is recommended for a school.
