Rainbowfish - Lacustris (Melanotaenia lacustris)
The Lacustris Rainbowfish (Melanotaenia lacustris), also widely known as the Turquoise Rainbowfish or Lake Kutubu Rainbowfish, is a striking freshwater species prized for its vibrant, iridescent blue hues. This species is endemic to Lake Kutubu and its outlet, the Soro River, in the Southern Highlands of Papua New Guinea.
Key Features:
- They are peaceful, active schoolers. Because they are energetic swimmers, they should be kept in groups of 6 or more to reduce stress and encourage natural social behavior.
- Temperament - larger tetras (Congo, Diamond, or Bleeding Heart), danios, rasboras, and barbs (Tiger or Rosy)
- Moderate-friendly care level
- Maximum size: 10-12cm
- Ideal water temperature: 21.0°C - 26.0°C
- pH range: 7.0 - 8.5
They thrive in well-planted tanks with open areas for swimming. Use a dark substrate and pristine water conditions to make their colors "pop". A tight-fitting lid is essential as they are known jumpers.
