Rainbowfish - Coen River (Melanotaenia Trifasciata)
The Coen River rainbowfish (Melanotaenia trifasciata) is a stunning, vibrantly colored Australian native fish popular in the aquarium hobby. Known for its peaceful nature and active swimming, it is a type of banded rainbowfish originating from the clear waters of the Coen River in the Cape York Peninsula of Northern Queensland.
Key Features:
- Coen River rainbowfish are peaceful community fish but their speed may mean they outcompete slower, bottom-dwelling species for food.
- Temperament - different rainbowfish species (like Boesemani, Red Irian, or Crimson Spotted) can be kept together to create a vibrant display
- Moderate-friendly care level
- Maximum size: 9-15cm
- Ideal water temperature: 22.0°C - 28.0°C
- pH range: 6.0 - 8.0
A minimum aquarium length of 80cm (3 feet) is recommended due to their active swimming nature, with larger tanks (e.g., 400 litres or 55 gallons for a large school) being preferable. The tank should be well-planted with ample open swimming space and a tight-fitting lid, as they are known to jump.
