When grown above water, its leaves are simple and serrated; once submerged in your aquarium, they morph into breathtaking, comb-like "sawtooth" feathers that shift from vibrant green to intense golden-orange and coppery-red under strong lighting.
Unlike common fine-leafed stem plants, Mermaid Weed features thick, rigid vertical stems decorated with deeply incised, tooth-edged foliage. This distinct jagged shape offers an eye-catching texturescape when positioned next to smooth, broad-leafed species or fine mosses.
While it grows at a manageable, moderate pace—meaning it won't overtake your tank overnight like other stem plants—its true magic lies in its responsiveness to environment. Under standard low-tech lighting, it retains an elegant yellowish-green coloration. However, when provided with high lighting, injected CO2, and iron supplements, the upper canopy explodes into brilliant shades of fiery copper and red.
