Eel - Spotted Spiny (Macrognathus siamensis)

Add a captivating touch of the exotic to your aquarium with the Spotted Spiny Eel (Macrognathus siamensis)! Often called the Peacock Eel, this incredibly unique, snake-like "oddball" fish features a warm sand-brown body highlighted by a subtle golden lateral stripe and beautiful, eye-catching "peacock ocelli" (dark spots bordered in white) along its dorsal fin. Maxing out at a manageable 20โ€“30 cm, this highly intelligent bottom-dweller is the absolute best starter species for anyone looking to keep a freshwater spiny eel!

Despite their common name, these are not true marine eelsโ€”meaning they do not grow into unmanageable river monsters. Instead, they maintain a relatively modest size, navigating the bottom levels of the tank with a sleek, ribbon-like grace. Over time, these inquisitive creatures become exceptionally tame. They quickly learn to recognize their caretakers and will even boldly swim up to gently take food straight from your fingertips or a pair of aquascaping tweezers!
During the day, they love to use their soft, pointed snouts to playfully burrow completely into the substrate, leaving nothing but their curious little eyes poking out to watch the tank. At dusk and feeding times, they emerge entirely, casting a spectacular silhouette as they explore the lower canopy of your aquarium.
