Corydoras - Albino Pygmy (Corydoras pygmaeus)
The Albino pygmy corydoras is a popular, peaceful, and social miniature catfish species in the aquarium hobby, known for its small size (up to 3 cm or 1.2 inches) and unique mid-water schooling behavior. Native to the Amazon basin in South America, it is an excellent choice for nano and community tanks. Unlike most other Corydoras species that stay strictly at the bottom, pygmy corys are unique because they often hover and school in the mid-water column, almost like a hummingbird, while also foraging on the substrate.
Key Features:
- As highly social, schooling fish, they must be kept in groups of at least six or more individuals to thrive, feel secure, and exhibit natural behaviors.
- Temperament - pygmy corydoras are best kept with other small, peaceful species that won't outcompete them for food or see them as prey
- Beginner-friendly care level
- Maximum size: 2.5-3cm
- Ideal water temperature: 22.0°C - 26.0°C
- pH range: 6.0 - 7.5
Fine, soft sand is ideal to protect their delicate barbels as they sift for food. Avoid sharp or coarse gravel. They feel secure with plenty of live plants, driftwood, and other hiding spots.
