Cory - Smudge Spot (Hoplisoma simile)
The Smudge Spot Cory (Hoplisoma simile) is a vibrant, hardy, and active freshwater fish known for its striking golden-tan body accented by fine dark speckling and a brilliant, glowing violet-blue smudge marking found near the base of the tail. It is a popular and excellent choice for aquarists of all experience levels due to its easy care requirements.
Key Features
- Generally peaceful, but they are active, social, and known to become stressed or reclusive if kept in small groups. Keeping them in a school of at least five or six helps minimize stress and prompts them to display their best natural schooling and foraging behaviors.

They appreciate a well-planted aquarium with open areas for swimming and foraging along the bottom. Smooth sand substrates and shaded areas under driftwood help protect their delicate barbels, while providing plenty of hiding spots. A secure lid is recommended as they are capable of darting to the surface for a breath of atmospheric air and can occasionally jump.
