Cory - Pygmy (Gastrodermus pygmaeus)
The Pygmy Cory (Gastrodermus pygmaeus) is a vibrant, hardy, and active freshwater fish known for its striking silver-green iridescent body accented by a distinct, glowing black horizontal stripe running from snout to tail. It is a popular and excellent choice for aquarists of all experience levels due to its easy care requirements.
Key Features
- Generally peaceful, but they are active, social, and known to become stressed or reclusive if kept in small groups. Keeping them in a school of at least six to eight helps minimize stress and prompts them to display their unique, mid-water schooling behaviors rather than just swimming along the bottom.
- Beginner-friendly.
- Maximum size: 2–3cm
- Ideal water temperature: 22.0°C - 26.0°C
- pH range: 6.0 - 7.5
They appreciate a well-planted aquarium with open areas for swimming. Fine sand substrates, mosses, and broad-leafed plants provide excellent resting places for their tiny frames, while offering plenty of hiding spots. A secure lid is recommended as they can dart to the surface for a breath of atmospheric air and can occasionally jump.
