Catfish - Peppermint Bristlenose (Ancistrus dolichopterus)
The peppermint bristlenose (Ancistrus sp. "Peppermint"; L181 or L183 depending on exact type) is a popular, peaceful, and efficient algae-eating freshwater catfish known for its striking black body with white spots. They are a distinct species from the common bristlenose and are a great addition to most community aquariums. Peppermint bristlenose plecos are hardy and adaptable to a range of water conditions, but they thrive in a well-maintained environment that simulates their natural South American river habitat.
Key Features:
- Peaceful. Adult males may fight at times for territory.
- Temperament - they are a peaceful species that can cohabitate well with most community fish like tetras, rasboras, and corydoras
- Beginner-friendly care level
- Maximum size: 10-15cm
- Ideal water temperature: 22.0°C - 27.0°C
- pH range: 5.5 - 7.5
They are primarily nocturnal and require ample hiding spots such as caves, rocks, and driftwood. Driftwood is particularly important as they will gnaw at it as part of their diet.
