Barb - Tiger (Puntius tetrazona)
The cherry barb (Puntius titteya) is a popular, peaceful, and hardy freshwater fish known for its vibrant red color and active schooling behavior, making it an excellent choice for beginner aquarists. It is native to Sri Lanka and is currently considered a vulnerable species in the wild.
Key Features:
- They are active, social, schooling fish and should be kept in groups of at least six or more to reduce shyness and promote natural behaviors. They are generally peaceful but can sometimes display mild aggression or fin-nipping behavior if kept in very small groups or with slow-moving, long-finned species.
- Beginner-friendly.
- Maximum size: 4-5cm
- Ideal water temperature: 23.0°C - 27.0°C
- pH range: 6.0 - 7.5
They prefer a well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots (plants, caves, driftwood) and a dark substrate to help enhance their coloration and make them feel secure. Gentle water flow is preferred.
