Barb - Odessa (Pethia padamya)
The Odessa barb (Pethia padamya) is a vibrant, active species of freshwater fish popular in the aquarium hobby. They are known for their striking coloration, hardiness, and social nature. The fish gets its common name from the Ukrainian city of Odessa, where it first appeared in the aquarium trade in the 1970s, though it is actually native to Central Myanmar.
Key Features:
- Odessa barbs are active, schooling fish. Keeping them in groups of six or more helps diffuse any potential fin-nipping behavior and encourages natural schooling dynamics. They are generally peaceful but should be monitored with slow-moving, long-finned tank mates.
- Beginner-friendly.
- Maximum size: 5-8cm
- Ideal water temperature: 21.0°C - 26.0°C
- pH range: 6.0 - 7.5
They need ample open space for swimming, as well as hiding spots created by plants, rocks, and driftwood. A tight-fitting lid is essential as they are known to be jumpers
