Barb - Odessa (Pethia padamya)
The Odessa Barb (Pethia padamyya) is a vibrant, hardy, and active freshwater fish known for its striking silver-gold body accented by dark scales and a brilliant, glowing bright-red horizontal stripe found on mature males. It is a popular and excellent choice for aquarists of all experience levels due to its easy care requirements.
Key Features
- Generally peaceful, but they are active, social, and known to display playful chasing behaviors if kept in small groups. Keeping them in a school of at least five or six helps minimize stress and prompts males to display their best coloration.
- Beginner-friendly.
- Maximum size: 6–7cm
- Ideal water temperature: 20.0°C - 25.0°C
- pH range: 6.5 - 7.8
They appreciate a well-planted aquarium with open areas for swimming. Darker substrates and dense vegetation help their vivid red stripes stand out, while providing plenty of hiding spots. A secure lid is recommended as they are good jumpers.
