Barb - Five Banded (Desmopuntius pentazona)
The Five Banded Barb (Desmopuntius pentazona) is a vibrant, hardy, and active freshwater fish known for its warm reddish-gold body contrasted by five distinct, vertical black bars and bright orange accents on its fins. It is a popular and excellent choice for aquarists of all experience levels due to its easy care requirements.
Key Features
- Generally peaceful, but they are active, social, and known to become timid and reclusive if kept in small groups. Keeping them in a school of at least five or six helps minimize this behavior, builds their confidence, and makes them much less likely to nip fins compared to other barb species.
- Beginner-friendly.
- Maximum size: 5cm
- Ideal water temperature: 23.0°C - 29.0°C
- pH range: 5.0 - 7.0
They appreciate a well-planted aquarium with open areas for swimming. They thrive best in tanks with darker substrates, floating plants to dim the lighting, and plenty of leaf litter or smooth driftwood to mimic their natural peat swamp habitats. A secure lid is recommended as they are good jumpers.
