Barb - Albino Tiger (Puntius tetrazona)
The Albino Tiger Barb (Puntigrus tetrazona) is a popular, active, and hardy freshwater fish known for its striking cream-gold body, bright orange fins, and distinct white-on-peach vertical stripes, making it an excellent choice for beginner aquarists. It is a selectively bred color variant of the classic Tiger Barb native to Southeast Asia and is a staple favorite in the aquarium hobby.
Key Features
- They are highly active, social, and lively fish that must be kept in schools of at least six to eight individuals to establish a natural pecking order and significantly reduce any nipping behaviors.
- They are energetic community fish, though mature individuals can display semi-aggressive fin-nipping tendencies toward slow-moving or long-finned tankmates if their school is too small or the aquarium lacks space.
- Beginner-friendly.
- Maximum size: 5–7cm.
- Ideal water temperature: 22.0°C - 26.0°C
- pH range: 6.0 - 7.5
- They prefer a spacious, well-planted aquarium with plenty of hiding spots (dense live plants, caves, and driftwood) combined with ample open swimming space for their fast-paced schooling. Because they are fast swimmers and can jump when startled, a tight-fitting tank lid is highly recommended.
- They thrive in soft to moderately hard, slightly acidic to neutral water with steady water flow and efficient filtration.
