Endemic to a small native area of Myanmar they hail from small, very brightly lit ponds with very dense plants as cover.
The CPD is not a schooling fish but does best when kept in groups of at least 6 fish. Males can often be observed squabbling amongst each other with their fins flared and chasing each other around the tank. This is common courting behaviour.
Additionally, these fish spawn very easily in the home aquarium. They lay their eggs almost daily and given the aquarium has enough cover the fry can survive predation. Furthermore, males are easily distinguished by their bright coloured red fins as well as their deeper body colour.
Growing to a maximum of 2.5cm this fish are well suited to smaller aquariums and are considered somewhat shrimp safe. Also they enjoy a lifespan of 3-5yrs.
Feeding
CPDs are omnivores and will take a wide range of foods as long as they are within the correct size range. Crushed flake and pellets are great staple as well as frozen daphnia, brine shrimp and mosquito larvae.
