The Blue Ram is a selectively bred version of The Ram Cichlid that is found in the Llanos of Venezuela and Colombia in South America's Orinoco River basin. They inhabit streams as well as lakes and ponds that are mostly very shallow, with some vegetation and some sandy or muddy substrate. They feed on plant material and small organisms by sifting the fine substrate. They can also feed on waterborne animals, and sometimes will take insects from the water surface.
Thanks to its ease of care, beautiful colours, and peaceful nature, the Ram Cichlid is regarded as one of the best "beginner" cichlids in the hobby. They're not picky eaters and will readily accept nearly anything they are being fed. These do not have very strict water requirements but can be vulnerable to sudden changes in water conditions, stability is key.
The omnivorous Ram Cichlid can be fed a mix of foods such as brine shrimp and blood worms. All fish benefit from adding vitamins and supplements to their food so some quality flakes and pellets should be a staple in their diet. Feed 2 to 5 tiny pinches of food a day in smaller quantities rather than a singular large feeding daily.
