Black Neon Tetra (Hyphessobrycon herbertaxelrodi)
The black neon tetra is an energetic little beauty with a pleasant personality. Put this fish among contrasting plants and a dark background.
- Appearance: Silver belly, black top, and green to white line from eye to tail.
- Size: Can grow up to 4 cm (1.58 in).
- Habitat: Native to the Paraguay River Basin in South America, they can live in a variety of habitats, including forest streams, seasonal floodwaters, and soft, acidic water.
- Temperament: Peaceful. Black Neons Tetras get along with most other tetras. Larger, aggressive fish are not recommended for these guys to feel comfortable.
- Diet: Omnivorous and will eat a variety of foods, although live foods such as brine shrimp and live black worm make a great addition to their diet.
- Breeding: Egg layers that scatter their eggs on leaves, glass, and rocks in the aquarium. Parents should be removed from the tank after they lay the eggs as they are notorious egg eaters.
Here are some tips for caring for black neon tetras:
- Keep them in a school of about 6 or more.
- Provide a planted aquarium to help them feel less stressed.
- Maintain water parameters of pH: 5.5—7.0 and temperature: 22°C - 27°C.
- Use a dark substrate in the breeding tank and very dim lighting.
- Filter the water through aquarium-safe peat.
- Provide fine-textured, live plants as a spawning medium
